1.1. Aims of the course
The subject and its expected results respond to objectives related to the tasks of documentary research and dissemination of results:
- Provide the student with premises and guidelines related to literature research and the dissemination of research results.
- Encourage a critical and grounded judgment to be able to face tasks of literature review, writing of scientific / academic documents and oral defense of them.
- Make the student know the desk documentation and communication tools used in the academic context.
1.2. Context and importance of this course in the degree
The subject represents the possibility of giving the student the necessary basic training, with respect to the field of research, which is needed to promote the preparation of quality academic and research papers and reports.
1.3. Recommendations to take this course
It is recommended to take this course for those who have not previously carried out tasks related to the planning, development and layout of academic and / or research works, such as final degree projects, final master's degree projects or equivalent. The practical nature of the subject, and its formative value, is accompanied by the need for the student to show a proactive attitude promoting autonomous work that allows them to identify their own needs with respect to the theoretical-practical content. Therefore, it is recommended to choose this subject based on the student's previous research training.
2.1. Competences
The competences related to the subject are:
Basic and general competences
CB01: Possess and understand knowledge that provides a basis or opportunity to be original in the development and / or application of ideas, often in a research context.
CB04: That students know how to communicate their conclusions and the knowledge and ultimate reasons that support them to specialized and non-specialized audiences in a clear and unambiguous way.
CG01: Access the sources of specialized information on the specific topics of the master and extract the relevant bibliographic sources for a specific topic of study.
CG04: Collect information and analyze it with scientific tools.
CG14: Prepare reports and documents based on the proper use of the source language; and defend them orally and in writing, following the quality criteria of the specific fields in which the action has been developed and adapting them to the receiving public.
CG18: Ability to synthesize information and analyze it critically, recognizing the contributions they make to the advancement of knowledge in a specific field, but at the same time, knowing how to detect their limitations.
Transversal competences
CT01: Locate and manage sources of documentation for research.
CT06: Synthesize and communicate research results.
Specific competences
CE13: Know formal and content aspects related to the publication and preparation of research papers and the preparation of their oral defense.
2.2. Learning goals
Students should obtain the following results:
- Critically analyse, recognise and identify specialised and rigorous sources when performing bibliographic searches about a given theme
- Carry out processes to prepare, produce and undertake academic works with suitable content and presentation. Students should consider a specific and coherent frame and style of academic writing in relation to the body of the work
- Prepare oral presentations in time, style and content terms
2.3. Importance of learning goals
3. Assessment (1st and 2nd call)
3.1. Assessment tasks (description of tasks, marking system and assessment criteria)
1. Evaluation activities
Given the eminently practical nature of the subject, the student must demonstrate that he/she has achieved the expected learning results through the following evaluation activities:
1) Preparation of an academic report in presentation format: the student must carry out a review work on a topic of interest. Said work should focus on the comparative analysis of different investigations that allow to deepen, at a critical level, with respect to the research processes, as well as the structuring and development of the body of the selected works.
2) Oral presentation of the research work: the student must prepare an oral communication of their academic report lasting no more than 10 minutes. In this defense session, the participating teachers and students can make the considerations, comments and / or questions that they deem appropriate.
3) Self-assessment: students must critically and objectively assess their own work during the course of the course using rubrics and / or assessment criteria provided by the teaching staff.
2. Evaluation criteria
1. Content of the academic report in the oral presentation. The weight for this part will be 60% of the final grade.
2. Oral communication in the presentation of the work. The weight for this part will be 30% of the final grade.
3. Self-assessment. The weight for this part will be 10% of the final grade.
In order to pass the subject, the student must:
Obtain a grade equal to or higher than 5 points in the task related to the content of the academic report developed in the presentation.
Obtain a grade equal to or higher than 5 points in the task related to oral communication in the presentation of the work prepared.
Thus, the qualification obtained in the self-evaluation process will be taken into account once the two aforementioned conditions are met.
3. Second call
The students who in the first call have not obtained a grade greater than or equal to 5 points in the aforementioned task, will carry out the same exercise in the next call (oral presentation of the academic report), modifying and correcting all those questions indicated by the teachers in the previous call; or proceed to its realization in those cases that the qualification is not presented.
4. Global assessment
Given the practical nature of the subject, and considering the learning outcomes, tasks similar to those stipulated in previous sections are proposed for the global assessment situations of the student body.
Assessment criteria and levels of demand: They are determined by the learning outcomes associated with the subject.
4. Methodology, learning tasks, syllabus and resources
4.1. Methodological overview
The subject is presented from a theoretical and practical perspective. The teaching staff will provide the students with all the necessary material to work on the subject and, in the face-to-face sessions, in addition to the presentation of these contents by the teaching staff, the practical application of them will be favored in the sessions, through group activities and their application in the report that students should prepare for their oral presentation.
The facilitation of the material, as well as the related tasks that will be proposed, will be informed through the Moodle platform.
4.2. Learning tasks
The course includes 2 ECTS organized according to:
- Presentation of contents by the teacher: some face-to-face sessions will be held so that the teacher can delve into the theoretical-conceptual aspects of interest, and can give premises and guidelines in relation to the preparation of individual work.
- Classroom activities. Group practice activities: In the sessions for face-to-face classes, some activities can be carried out in small and large groups aimed at the practical application of the subject contents, such as: use of databases, critical analysis of scientific articles, elaboration of specific parts of scientific articles, etc.
- Follow-up of work and guided discovery: The idea is that each student receives follow-up feedback, if they so wish, from the teacher involved and can answer (and resolve) all possible doubts. With all this methodological approach carried out, it is sought that the student himself, in a guided way, becomes aware of her learning.
- Autonomous work by the student: the course consists of hours of non-contact work by the student. This work consists of reading and studying the material provided by the teaching staff in the different formats, as well as preparing the aforementioned research report.
4.3. Syllabus
The course will address the following topics:
1. Scientific documentation techniques and informational skills.
2. Written dissemination of research results, quantitative perspective.
3. Written dissemination of research results, qualitative perspective.
4. Oral dissemination of research results.
4.4. Course planning and calendar
Details regarding timetable, and further information, please refer to the Master’s website. In addition, the specific calendar of the subject will be provided to students through the Moodle platform.
